Parallel-USB Converter Cable

We use win2k pro and find that it “loses” printers regularly that are connected via parallel-USB converter cables. A reboot finds the printer again and prints out the outstanding queue, but it really annoys people if they have to do this numerous times a day.

Does anyone know if this is a known thing and if there are any fixes for it.
