PC locking up

If I select a desktop icon, right click and select Properties from the drop down menu, my PC locks solid. It does so without my having been shown the properties I wanted to view. I have to reboot as there is no other way to free up the system. Ctrl/Alt/Del simply brings up the “busy waiting to shut down” message.
