PCI-E x4 cards and x16 slots

Is it possible to put a PCI-E x4 card into a PCI-E x16 slot where the x16 slot is designated as x4 electrically? I want to put a Qlogic QLE2462 HBA into an x16 slot that is not designated as a video adapter slot.
