Working on a Windows 98 HP Pavilion PC. PC has worked fine for 3 years and developed major performance issues in the last two months. First task was to disable numerous unecessary systray items and identify task list items. Resources have improved from 24% (!) at boot-up to 68%. Still trying to identify a process named “systimer” and discover the source of an unusual error message. At shutdown I will usually be presented with a dialog box titled “Notification Wnd for RNA Admin” at which time I will have to choose “End Task” to continue shutting down. I know that RNA is part of MSDUN but cannot find any answers to this on MS knowledge base. System file checker passed everything except two files: “pcwiz.exe” and “syswiz.386” saying that these were damaged. However sfc would not restore these from the cab files saying they could not be found. MS Knowledge base is not helpful on the purpose or location of these either. Virus protection was out of date but new Norton AV 2003 is now installed, updated, and full system scan finds no infection.
I am frustrated to the point of running the HP recovery CD, which, even without formatting, says it will require reinstallation of all software (So it must wipe the registry). My client vehemently rejects this as a solution. Does anyone have any ideas?
