performance testing suggestions

I’m currently a functional software QA tester and would like to move into perfromance testing. From information i’ve gathered it seems logical to learn the methodology prior to specific tools. Please recommend avenues to accomplish this move. i.e. specific books, websites, etc…thanks in advance.
