Phantom W: Drive?

Today I saw something I’ve never seen before and I was hoping someone could explain it…

After opening up Windows Explorer on a W95 running active desktop I was suprised to see a two W: drives listed. Clicking on the drives resulted in an error message stating that the drive was inaccesible.

Open another window of Explorer and the Drives are not there and refreshing the view of the WWeird screen makes the drives dissapear. Every third or fourth time you open explorer they reappear
My workmate informed me that his W98 machine does the same thing every now and then.

Can someone enlighten us please?
