POP3 time Out Error on Win 98 LAN

by merrik . Updated 24 years, 10 months ago

Hello

I have just set a a 5 PC Lan running windows 98. I have set up internal email using the free “1st Class Mail Server” and Outlook Express. When i send mail between the machines the messages are received as soon as the Send/Rec button is pressed in Outlook Express, but Oulook Express then continues to try to communicate with the Mail server (i think). It comes up with, Your Pop3 server has not responded in 30 seconds” When i tell it to stop waiting i get the error:

A time out error occured while communicating with the server. Acount BridgIT, server Laptop2, Protocol POP3, Port: 110, Secure (SSL):No, Error Number: 0x800CCC19

Each time you press send/rec a new copy of the message is downloaded to the client machine.

What is causing these errors and how do I fix them?

Any help would be greatly appreciated including suggestions on other free mail servers that will allow 5 users.

I would prefer to stay with Outlook express as these machines are being used to run internet/email workshops for beginners in the community, we would also prefer to keep the email component internal (not use the net).

Many thanks
Merri
