Primary Domain missing during logon

If a user is logged on to the network from his office and removes ethernet cable and goes home. Then while still in profile logs on using vpn. Then shuts down the system. Then boots the computer and when user tries to logon to his profile the domain is missing when trying to logon to user profile or desktop. What can cause this? I can log on as Admin and add user to Domain but global password needs to be reset?
