Print Image File

What are the various methods possible for generating a print image file for submission to medical claims EDI clearinghouses. I am currently simply writing out the data to an ASCII text file coding the output so each data element consistently appearsin the same place in the file. Are others doing this by writing the outputting code directly in a printer control language?
