Print jobs stopping

Win2000 with Canon IP5000 USB printer. Since installation, 70% of first print pages stop partway thru and 95% of second page stops partway thru. Printer has been tested on other PCs and works fine. Printers attached via parallel cable work fine. (IP5000 is only USB). No error messages in event log.Have tried other USB printers with same problem. Put a new hard disk in the PC, installed Win2000 & Office and printed with no problem. Installed original hard disk and printing problem started again. Problem same whether spooled or printed directly to printer.
