print sharing problem Windows ME and 98

The configuration:
1. Dell Dimension desktop running Windows ME connected to Xerox 470CX multifunction printer. No firewall (while testing).
2. Toshiba Tecra laptop running Windows 98
– both have the latest printer drivers from Xerox
– printer and file sharing enabled on the desktop
– the laptop can see and read files on the desktop
– the shared printer shows up on the laptop
– the printer works when connected directly to the laptop’s parallel port

Problem:
I can’t print via the network. Symptoms: no job shows up on the job q (on either system), no errors are reported, nothing is printed.
I noticed on the desktop that the description of the File and Printer Sharing network component specifically says it will enable sharing withsystems running Windows NT or Windows for Workgroups. So am I doomed to failure here?
