printer error invalid access to memory

trying to install a canon S200x USB printer.Displays “invalid access to memory location” error message and will not print. Advised by canon support that if the PCI to USB card works via the chipset (which it does:
VIA VT83C572/VT82C586 to USB)to contact PC manufacturer. This is not an option as the manufacturer is unknown. The PCI to USB card which connects the printer was bought from an independant trader and no software was supplied.please can any help me to remedy this?
Windows 98 OS.
