printer ink

Recently bought a Compaq pc with printer.
The printer is an IJ600 and the problem involves the amount of ink used on a printout. Does the driver control this or is there an adjustment as the printout is literally “soaking wet” when it comes out.
A set of cartridges does not last too long.
