I’m having problems understanding how printers are named in a network situation.
On a domain named Office, there is a server called Sales. On this server, a printer has been installed. The printer is a Hewlett Packard 4050 Series PCL 6 printer. It has been given a share name of HP4050.
Where my lack of understanding comes in is in trying to connect to this printer via Windows NT Workstation computers. I go to Start / Settings / Printers and choose Add Printer. I choose Network Printer Server and click Next. From this screen, the list of printers are shown in two places – At the top, the printers are listed directly under the Domain Name. Lower down, the printers are also listed under the specific machine name. My problem is the display under the Domain Name.
It appears as follows:
Office
\\SALES\HP LaserJet 4050 Ser HP LaserJet 4050 Series PCL 6
That is, the share name is appearing as “HP LaserJet 4050 Series PCL 6” as is the printer name.
Further down, under the machine name, it appears as:
SALES
HP4050 HP LaserJet 4050 Series PCL 6
That is, the share name appears as “HP4050” which makes sense.
My question is – how do determine how the printer appears directly under the domain name?
