Printer not collating reports

I’ve have a HP Laserjet 4 and this problem only happens sporadically. I want to print multiple copies of a document and the collate box is checked. But when it prints, it prints the first page and then several copies of the second, third pages, etc.
I am running Windows XP and Word XP?
