printing odd characters

Ever since I upgraded to w2k Professional, All my symbol characters aren’t being printed, eg. In MS Word2K all my bullet points come out as ampersands, or when I create a pdf file for the bullet points appear as 2 question marks. I tried this with a w98 and NT system and they work fine, is there a patch for this problem?
