Printing Performance

Problem printing on NT SP6a. Pentium 500MHz 256 MB Ram. User sends print job to Hp laserjet 4 and it takes about 5 minutes for the job to stop printing(not large documents, even test page does it). I checked the Performance monitor and see that the SPOOLSS.EXE is taking up 100% cpu resources. Tried reapplying the SP and still having trouble
