I have an older hard drive that has been my storage drive for years now. Everything was fine until recently when I was switching internal slave drives back and forth. Now this hard drive is dead I guess and I have to recover some files from it. The problem is that my computer will not boot up if the drive is connected. It’ll turn on and then it just freezes. I have tried switching the settings to slave but it still doesnt work. So I bought an external enclosure. I boot my computer up, then I power up the HDD in the external enclosure. Everything installs, but I cant find the drive at all. I open Disk Doctor but it cant find the drive either. When I shut my computer down it wont shut down until the external drive is off. When I turn my computer on, if the external drive is on, it wont start. I get fed up with this and decide to reformat. So I boot off a CD, but I cant even get to the screen where I choose to reformat it. I still want to recover files, but if I can’t then I’ll reformat. Please help.
