problem with file transfer on win2000

A friend of mine recently installed win2000 for me and since then I’ve had trouble uploading files via ftp and even transfering files through msn or ICQ. My machine automatically re-boots whenever I attempt to upload. I have my user permissions set to administrator to no avail. I am also behine a firewall, but I still experience the same when that has been disabled.
I am not well versed in win2000, can anyone give me an idea of what might be wrong? I believe its in the permissions?
