Problem with no Sound

In win 98 I lost my sound. Is there a program that will help troubleshoot this or a FAQ that would lead me through the steps?

When I go to control panel/sounds and highlight a line with a speaker icon and then try tp preview it the > arrow box and the square box are not available to select.

I reloaded my sound card drivers and that didn’t help.
