Problems with ME and drivers?

by brennand . Updated 25 years ago

I submitted a query a few weeks ago about difficulties installing a HPp1000 printer under ME. I had some excellent responses. Now I have a related issue. Using the HP driver CD, I uninstall the drivers (as instructed) prior to re-installing. On restarting the PC, startup hangs prior to loading Windows. If I access Task Manager, I find three instances of ?cmdninst? and one of ?statmgr?. If I end the ?cmdninst? task, ?msgsrv32? appears in the task list, but the PC won?t start. ctrl-alt-del simplyreproduces the same. I have to boot in SAFE mode and investigate. I find a couple of references to HPp1000 in Win-Ini and disable them, but to no effect.
Eventually, in despair, I have re-enabled them, but also used my Recovery CD to refresh my Windows ME installation. The PC now works, but I can?t install the printer. I assume ?cmdninst? is the Uninstall command, still trying to function and hanging the system until it can succeed.

Can anyone help me ?clean? the system without having to format and reload Windows? I hope that with a clean system I can then install the printer. The HP CD is labelled ?for W9x and ME? so I assume the driver supports Windows ME.

Thanks,

Denis
