Problems with USB mouse on Toshiba Satellite A215-S5818

Bought my wife a laptop for christmas – now we are trying to add a USB mouse to it – when the mouse is plugged in we can use it to click on buttons or links, and so on, but it will not move the cursor. Anyone know what might be causing this or better yet, how to fix it?
