Profiles and home folders

I use Win 2000 server with W98 clients.
i created profiles for each user at \\server\profiles\%username and home folders at \\server\home\%username%.
All the profiles end up in the home folders and the profiles directory is empty. I don’t want users going to their home folder and deleting the profile.
why is it happening?
