ps/2 mouse problem in IBM 300gl machine(o.s:windows 98)

At first i connect ps/2 wheel mouse to the ps/2
port (machine: IBM 300GL)then i switch on the machine.it displayes
8603 pointing device error.so mouse is not detected.so what should i do?
