Quad processor PC – Capabilities?

I was wondering how much a Quad enabled processor PC can handle over a dual. Is the output and power doubled effectively. Would it compute excel spreadsheet links faster/better? If anyone has real production environment details, I’d like to hear about it. Thanks in advance.
