Re-creating DOS environment in XP?

by lindenwork . Updated 23 years, 2 months ago

I just bought a new computer and decided to try Windows XP; we use Win98SE on other machines. A big part of my job is to manage several DOS databases. The application is pretty old (we’ll have a new DBMS in a year or so), and we do many work-aroundsusing foxpro2.5.

I have not found a good way to make XP’s DOS act like real DOS. Normally, I spend a lot of time navigating in DOS. Most of the solutions that I have found for DOS on XP assume that you just want to change one application (like agame), not re-create the DOS environment.

I have tried changing autoexec.nt and config.nt, but I don’t know much about what I should change some of the more advanced settings to. I have also tried changing the properties of command.com and cmd.exe, but, again, it was trial and error (and error).

The actual problems I need to fix are: 1. applications taking a long time load and exit, and 2. slow navigation between directories.
