Read Only Files

I am on an NT 4.0 network
Windows 95 and 98
Office 97 Pro
A few pc’s open an excel or word doc. and it comes up read only. If you reboot the pc it works ok. This happens now and then or it happens often. It happens on both 95 and 98 and differentpc’s.
Any ideas how to fix the problem?
