recognizing video card memory

I am working on a friend’s dell computer and i tried to install a game and error popped up saying need video card with memory of at least 16 mb.My friend ordered a video card from dell that has 64mb of memory.I installed the card and it works as faras color but computer still won’t recognize the memory.What could be the problem?
