Recovering data?

I recently started to have trouble with a USB external hard drive, sometimes it would’nt show up on my computer. Now I get the message that this drive is “not accessible the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable”, can anyone tell me if there is anything I can do to recover the files from the drive.
I am running Win XP Pro and the drive in question is a Maxtor 40 gb
