recovering file saved over by app

I was recently using Leech Ftp on a windows me system and I transfered a file from an ftp server to my desktop. I didn’t realize that the file had the same name as a file that was on my desktop, a very important file, and it saved right over the file without even a prompt. I was wondering if there was any way to recover the original version of the file, or if it was lost for good. If anyone can help me on this it would be a tremendous help.
