Recycle Bin Win98se

How can I get files to show themselves before I empty the bin? Senario: Delete (whatever) to recycle bin, click on desktop icon, window opens and shows nothing there. Click on empty, confirm “do you want to delete these (however many) files?”…So the files are there that I deleted but I cant see them. How do I make them appear?
