Red crosses and missing data

Recently I have been experiencing occasions when, on a web site, certain boxes are empty save for a small red cross in the top left corner. Sometimes clicking on this will bring forth data, but usually the box remains ‘dead’.
Any ideas of cause, and possible remedy, would be much appreciated.
