REGISTRY ERROR

I have a machine loaded with Win98 (r1)and Office 97. Each time the machine boots, I get an error message “problem with the registry, windows will now reboot and repair the registry.” Once the PC has rebooted, it hangs. Then after restart, it gives the same error. I have tried reloading 98, but error continues.
