remote desktop via laptop

I am curious to see if anybody knows how, or if there is a possible way to connect a laptop to a tower or desktop pc via male/male svga or vga cable and access the desktop of the pc on the laptop? I have a client that has a server in a switch closet at his facility. there is no room for a monitor or keyboard/mouse in the closet. He can’t afford remote desktop software (ie. gotomypc, pcanywhere)and everytime we have to access the server, we have to tote a monitor, keyboard/mouse and connect with no standing room. My question is can I connect via a laptop and view the desktop of the server on my laptop and how do I do it?
