Removing background programs

If you are using software such as Cubase VST, you obviously increase the performance by removing background software via Ctrl+alt+ Delete. Is it possible to, as it were, take a snapshot of your computer with the unessential programs not running to save you having to systematically remove them all one by one; which is a real pain.
