Repartitioning an external HD

I had a power surge to a Dell desktop running XP that wouldn’t reboot until I ran checkdisk on it. Now my external hard drive doesn’t show in Disk Management as being a partitioned HD. And there doesn’t seem to be anyway for me to repartition the drive – the options are grayed out! I don’t need to reformat the drive I just need to partition it.

Any suggestions?
