Restore files from another computer.

I had Vista Business installed on my laptop with an 80Gb drive. I did a complete backup and several weekly scheduled backups on a 200Gb USB external drive. The 80Gb hard drive failed. I installed a 30Gb drive, installed Vista Business and tried to restore some files from the backup. The restore failed. I tried to restore a single folder and that failed.

What am I doing wrong?
