Restoring Active Directory

I need to restore my active directory to a new machine as we are stting up a QA enviroment. I have tried using the natinve windows backup to backup the system state, but then I cannot restore it onto the new machine. One of the problems is that the hardware is different in the
QA enviroment to our live enviroment. Please can someone tell me how I can restore the AD.
