RSM not recognizing new media

We are using the WIN2k built-in backup. Recently we purchased new backup tapes, (Travan 20/40mb – the previous tapes were also Travan) When placing them in the tape drive RSM doesn’t give any media pools, not even an unrecognized media pool. I’m trying to incorporate them into our backup pool but in the backup utility I’m getting errors like add unused media…
What is the solution?
Would using a software like Veritas backup exec solve the problem?
