S L O W boot in Win98 SE

I recently did a clean install of Windows98 SE on my older clone pc. It was running fine until my first visit to Microsoft Update. I was shown 14 critical updates and 2 driver updates (ESS modem). Like an idiot I did the driver updates AND 12 of the 14 critical updates… ALL AT ONCE. Upon my first reboot after the updates my PC now takes about 20 minutes for Windows to start. It bogs down on the Windows splash screen. The colored crawler bar at the bottom moves but JUST barely. Of the 12 critical updates only 6 of them have un-install procedures. Suggestions?
