safe mode for windows2000

How do I start windows 2000 in safe mode? I’m installing a cd writer and the computer shows that the cd rom exists in device manager, but is high lighted with a problem. I went to properies and was told the drivers for this device are not loaded. Windows will not load the drivers on remove the device and restart. Help!
