SATA Raid 1 Not Appearing in Windows Explorer Plus only one appears in DM

by jdalrymple . Updated 19 years, 2 months ago

I have an Abit KW7 Motherboard with VT8237 Southbridge and Raid controller. The Hard drives are 2 Seagate 160GB SATA drives. I partitioned both drives into three logical drives in an extended partition. All partitions are exactly the same size. I even left 10MB free on both drives for any Raid functionality that may need the extra space. I set both drives to dynamic disks and created a Raid 1 array with both the VIA Raid Tool in Windows and with the Raid Utility that is accessed before the boot process. Both Utilities created the mirror array and both say that it is functioning correctly.

The problem is that the Raid tool says the mirror is working correctly but niether drive appears in Windows Explorer nor My Computer. In the Disk Managment console only one drive appears and it says it is Unallocated with none of the partitions I setup, plus it also lists it as a Basic Disk. The Drive that the Disk Managment Console is diplaying is the Source disk at Controller 0 Channel 0.

This is my first time setting up a SATA Raid Array. I probably configured something in the wrong order or the partitions were created wrong not really for sure. Niether is a system boot drive. Both are only for storage. I would prefer them to have three partitions for data protection purposes, but, I guess as a last resort I could leave out partitioning them just as long as I can access the Source Disk and the Raid mirror is functioning correctly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. This Tech-Republic Forum Kicks!!
