saved password error connect dialog box

In Windows 2000 Pro I check the box save password in the connect dialog window of the dial-up adaptor but nextime I use it the password shows some 20 asteriks.
This new password is not recognized by my ISP ant the process is aborted. I have the re-enter my password edach time to be able to connect. Any ideas on correcting this ?
