Saving data from old HD using XP via USB

Trying to connect a Caviar 31600 Hard drive to an XP laptop via USB to save data on the old drive. I cannot see the Caviar 31600 drive on Windows Explorer. I can see a disk 1 listed on the USB connections. And I see the disk in device manager.

The drive is partitioned and I can see the files when I use a boot disk on the old Win 95 machine. The problem with this disk is Windows does not boot and scandisk reports a bad sector. So saving the data is now the priority.
