Scanner compatibility with Windows XP

I am using windows XP Home Edition and have an HP ScanJet 4100C scanner. My PC tells me that this Scanner will not work with XP even though before I had Gateway upgrade the firmware on my CD/RW drive it did work with XP. Now it will not work and when I went to HP’s site it had a download for upgrading the driver for the 4100C for users who upgraded to XP from a previous version of Windows. I tried to download this driver and it gets to the end and when I ran install on my PC it gives me a fatal error message. Can you help??
