Scanner recognised five times

Installed a canoscan 300 on a Cel850 system. Scanner works fine but in device manager it had a question mark against it and was recognised five times. I removed four of them and then rebooted but came up with new hardware found another four times. Idownloaded an update driver for the canoscan to work with win98se and now the canoscan is under imaging devices in device manager but again there are five of them. If I remove them windows redetects them. Everything thing is working fine and no problem devices in System information. I could probably leave the system as is but not happy about doing this. This is not causing any conflicts but why is one scanner being detected five times and how can I remove them. Any ideas thank you
