SCSI Card

I have an Adaptec 2906 SCSI card. The card has one internal connector and one external. My CD writer does not work if I connect anything to the external port. I tried working with the termination of the devices but the only way they work is if I only use the internal or the external but not both. How can I get this to work with both?
