Search companion always comes up

I have XP and when I click “My Computer” then click “C” or “D” drive I always get the “Search” companion or the search window that comes up. I have tried to turn the companion off however the “Search” window still comes up. What can I do to change this to make it work like the windows of old and go right to my files?
