Search from IE Address Bar problem

Searching from my IE address bar no longer works. For example, if I key in the word

anything

it ends up being displayed as a search for

http:///?%20anything

I am sure this has been caused by one of those websites that hijack homepages etc. I have now obtained software to prevent this happening again but does anyone know how to correct the search problem ?
