securing a network

I recently purchased a netgear router and attempted to connect my laptop wirelessly. I had trouble connecting and the only way it works now is if my network is unsecured. Meaning I have no passphrase or anything. The technicians told me there is something on my computer that is not allowing it to connect to a secure network. What settings can I change on my computer so that I can connect to a secure network?
